Tris, or more accurately, tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane is a buffer that is used extensively in molecular biology and biochemistry. Its useful buffer range is between pH 7-9, which corresponds to physiological pH of most living organisms.

As a pure compound, Tris is a base, and its aqueous solutions are alkaline. Tris base does not have buffering capacity.
